I have an acquaintance who doesn't expect to live past one more year. He's developed a dependance on drugs and alcohol, and he is a chronic alcoholic. If not for his reason being clouded by poison, he would be a great guy to be around. Yet, even in a drunken stupor, I've seen a glimmer of greatness.

I'm convinced that, because he doesn't expect to live much longer, he simply doesn't care. I can't help someone that doesn't care. His total disregard for his own life has damaged his ability to reason, and once someone looses their ability to reason then they become a mindless zombie. There might still be a chance for him, but only if he finds a reason to go on. I doubt that will ever happen.

It's a shame to watch someone with great intellect slowly rot away as his life becomes, to him, meaningless. It's painful when you know you can help, yet they are not willing. He only expects to live to 25, and welcomes the day when he doesn't wake up. The day he sees nothing, feels nothing, becomes nothing.

Nothing. It's not blackness, it's not light. It's what lies beyond peripheral vision, that white noise that has no sound, and there is no consciousness. It's what you experienced before you were conceived, with no mind to experience it. No heaven and no hell. There is no afterlife, at least not in this plain of reality.

Just for argument sake, if you did get re-incarnated, there will be no memory of this life.  It will no longer be you. Also, lets pretend there was a heaven. Eternity is a long time, and the things you can experience are finite. You'd end up trying to kill yourself out of boredom only to find out you can't die. And still, there might be no mind to experience it.

This world and this life is the only thing we know to be real. We know that we are just a spec in a cosmic ocean, but just by existing we have beaten the odds. What is the purpose of life? There might not be one. Or maybe, just maybe, the purpose of life is simply to live and experience life. In the words of Carl Sagan, we are a way for the universe to experience itself.

My friend sees no reason to go on. Despite there being so much to see and experience, he doesn't see it. There is so much fun to be had, so many things to enjoy, to learn and see. There doesn't need to be a reason, only a will.
"Life is just a ride. It goes up and down, round and round. It's got thrills and chills, and it can go any which way we want. It's only a choice between fear and love" _Bill Hicks
It's only a choice between fear and love. It's that simple. There are a lot of terrifying things in the world, and what's the main cause? Fear. People act out of fear. Some are afraid of going hungry or homeless, so they steal. Some fear the spread of new ideas, so they try to kill them before they spread. Some are afraid of the people who fear new ideas, so they kill them in defense. People lock their doors in fear of the people who are killing and stealing mostly out of fear.

It's only a choice. Choose love over fear, maybe something will go wrong, but you've already beat the odds by existing in the first place. The odds are in your favor, and the more people that choose love the better the odds.

The media will try to sell you fear, report on the next thing that might wipe you off the face of the earth. Your employer probably relies on your fear of debt. Corporations producing locks and bomb shelters will cash in on fear. However, there is one thing that you must remember. These fear mongers are betting against the house.

"You can make more money, but you can't make more time, so spend your time like it's your time." _Bucktown Tiger

Life, no matter how short, is worth far more then you can ever comprehend. If anything, it's the rarest, most precious resource in the entire cosmos. Everything that breaths is a treasure beyond comprehension, and every mind is worth infinitesimally more. Only a fool would throw it away.
